The Horry County Board of Education elected Rick Maxey, deputy superintendent, as interim superintendent one week after current Superintendent Cindy Elsberry resigned.
“I am honored and humbled for the opportunity to be interim superintendent,” Maxey said, “and I’m excited about continuing all the good work the district has been doing.”
As the deputy superintendent, Maxey is in charge of operations for the district, but now he’ll shift gears into a more administrative role. He plans to work beside Elsberry for a while to make the transition smoother for everyone.
“I think I come to the interim position with a lot of experience,” Maxey said. “I’ve worked in a lot of capacities, and that’s not saying there won’t be challenges, but I think my experience has given me the opportunity to handle them.”
