On Tuesday, November 4, the president-elect, Barack Obama, mentioned "Charleston's porches" in his acceptance speech.
Obama supporters in Charleston were excited at the mention of our beloved town in the candidates election-night speech. Here's the bit from the speech:
Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington -- it began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.
Barack Obama came to Charleston earlier this year, January 10, and spoke at the cistern on the College of Charleston campus. But that wasn't his first time in town, the president elect had also visited in April of 2007. The Post and Courier has more on his trips to the Holy City.
The paper also has a bit on the history of Charleston's porches.
